Abstract

This thesis investigated the use of picto-textual glosses in teaching reading based on scientific approach. The main concepts underpinning this study were hypermedia glossing (Jonassen, 1996 in Erçetin, 2010) and five discovery skills of disruptive innovators (Dyers, Gregersen & Christensen, 2011). Based on the form, the glosses used in this study were pictorial (visual) glosses and textual (verbal) glosses whereas based on the language, this study used L1 and L2 glosses. The study employed a qualitative case study which involved one class of Grade 10 students at a senior high school in Bandung. Aimed at investigating how picto-textual glosses can be adopted in reading classes, this study applied six stages consisting of pre-activity, observing, questioning, exploring, associating and communicating. Data were collected by means of observation, pre-test and post-test and questionnaire. The study reveals that picto-textual glosses can be used to improve students’ comprehension of text. However, in activities where students need to incorporate other linguistic skills, the glosses play less dominant role in learning and further guidance from the teacher is needed to accomplish the tasks. Results on the post-test indicate significant improvement on students’ reading scores with medium size effect. The study also shows students’ positive responses towards the use of picto-textual glosses in reading. Tesis ini meneliti penggunaan picto-tectual gloss dalam pengajaran membaca dalam bahasa Inggris dengan berdasarkan pada pendekatan saintifik. Konsep utama yang mendasari studi ini adalah hypermedia glossing (Jonassen, 1996 dalam Erçetin, 2010) dan lima kemampuan discovery dalam disruptive innovators (Dyers, Gregersen & Christensen, 2011). Berdasarkan kategori bentuknya, gloss yang digunakan dalam stidu ini adalah pictorial gloss (visual) dan textual (verbal) gloss sedangkan berdasarkan kategori bahasanya, yang digunakan adalah L1 and L2 gloss. Penelitian ini menggunakan studi kasus dengan melibatkan satu kelas X di sebuah SMA di Bandung. Dengan bertujuan meneliti bagaimana picto-textual gloss dapat diaplikasikan di kelas membaca, studi ini menggunakan enam tahapan pembelajaran yang terdiri dari pre-activity, observing, questioning, exploring, associating dan communicating. Data diperoleh dengan cara observasi, pre-tes, pos-tes dan kuesioner. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa picto-textual gloss dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap teks. Tetapi, pada kegiatan-kegiatan dimana siswa harus menggunakan kemampuan linguistic lainnya, gloss berperan lebih kecil dalam pembelajaran dan diperlukan adanya bimbingan guru untuk menyelesaikan tugas. Hasil pos-tes mengindikasikan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan pada nilai tes membaca siswa dengan efek menengah. Studi ini juga menunjukkan respon siswa yang positif tehadap penggunaan picto-textual gloss dalam pelajaran membaca.
