Abstract
This study is motivated by the increasing use of lifestyle selfies among Generation Z university students as a form of self-expression on social media, which not only constructs self-image but also represents family relationships and affective functions in the digital space. The purpose of this study is to understand how Generation Z students present their self-image through lifestyle selfies, the reasons they perceive social media as a safer space than family, and how lifestyle selfies represent the family’s affective function. This research employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, involving five Generation Z university students in Bandung City as the main informants. The theoretical framework draws on Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory to examine self-image management on social media and Bronfenbrenner’s family ecology theory, particularly the concepts of the microsystem and virtual microsystem, to analyze the dynamics of family affective functions. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation of the informants’ Instagram accounts, while data analysis followed Creswell’s model, including data organization, coding, theme development, and interpretation of meaning. The findings indicate that lifestyle selfies are understood as a means of constructing an ideal self-image, a safe space for obtaining social validation, and a medium for representing togetherness and strengthening family affective functions through digital interaction. This study concludes that lifestyle selfies function not only as individual visual expressions but also as symbolic media reflecting the transformation of family affective functions into digital space Generation Z
