Abstract

Telah dilakukan penelitian peningkatan kadar mentol pada minyak permen dari tanaman Mentha piperita L. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kadar mentol pada minyak permendengan cara mengubah komponen-komponen lain yang terdapatpada minyak permen menjadi mentol menggunakan logam alumunium, KOH, dan etanol. Reaksi dilakukan dengan cara sistem refluks menggunakan 5 variasi suhu (20; 40; 60; 80; dan 100˚C), 5 variasi jumlah KOH (0,5; 1,0; 1,5; 2,0; dan 2,5 gram), 5 variasi jumlah etanol (10; 20; 30; 40; dan 50 mL), dan 5 variasi jumlah aluminium (0,3; 0,5; 0,7; 0,9; dan 1,1 gram). Hasil reaksi dianalisis dengan kromatografi gas(GC) dan GC-MS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil reaksi menggunakan logam aluminium, KOH, dan etanol dapat meningktakan kadar mentol pada minyak permen. Kondisi optimum yang diperoleh yaitu pada suhu 40˚C, jumlah KOH 1,5 gram, jumlah etanol 30 mL, dan jumlah aluminium 0,5 gram dengan persentase mentol yang diperoleh yaitu sebesar 55,845%. A research on the increasing levels of menthol in peppermint oil from the plant Mentha piperita L. was done. This research aims to increase the levels of menthol in peppermint oil by changing other components in the peppermint oil into menthol using aluminum metal, KOH, and ethanol. The reaction using a reflux system with temperature variations (20; 40; 60; 80; dan 100˚C), variation in the amount of KOH (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; dan 2.5 gram), ethanol (10; 20; 30; 40; dan 50 mL), and aluminium metal (0.3; 0.5; 0.7; 0.9; dan 1.1 gram). Reaction products were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-MS. The results showed that the reaction products using aluminum metal, KOH, and ethanol can drive increase the levels of menthol in peppermint oil. The optimum conditions were obtained, at a temperature of 40˚C, with KOH 1.5 grams, ethanol is 30 mL, and aluminium 0.5 grams. Precentage menthol obtained percentage that is equal to 55.845%.
