    Abstract

Circuit breakers (PMT) are an important component in the electric power distribution system because they function as a protection device when a disturbance occurs. One of the main parts of the PMT is the tripping coil, which is an electromagnetic coil that plays a role in automatically disconnecting the current. The main problem in this study is to analyze the working capability of the tripping coil on the 20 kV PMT at the Cigareleng substation, to ensure whether the coil is still able to work optimally under varying supply voltage conditions, and to identify factors that affect its performance. This research is motivated by the need for a reliable protection system in the distribution network, as well as the importance of preventive maintenance of the internal components of the PMT which are rarely studied in depth. The method used is field research, with data collection carried out through direct measurements of the voltage, current, and resistance of the tripping coil, as well as testing the minimum operational voltage limits of the coil carried out from 2023 to 2025. The results of the study show that the tripping coil still functions well at a voltage of 110 – 112 V, but begins to show performance weakening below 77 V, and does not work effectively below 50.8 V. The novelty of this study lies in the approach of testing the minimum operational voltage limits of the tripping coil directly in the field on a 20 kV distribution system, which provides crucial information regarding the actual working threshold of components under non-ideal supply conditions, as well as presents applicable preventive recommendations for condition-based maintenance strategies. These findings provide an important basis for evaluating the performance of protection systems and decision-making in actual condition-based maintenance strategies.
