Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas karakteristik produksi instrumen cuk dan cak karya Sutarjo, salah satu pengrajin alat musik tradisional di Kota Solo. Latar belakang penelitian ini berangkat dari pentingnya pelestarian musik keroncong yang identik dengan instrumen cuk dan cak sebagai bagian dari identitas budaya Indonesia. Tujuan penelitian adalah menganalisis karakteristik cuk dan cak Sutarjo dan mendeskripsikan proses produksi, teknik pembuatan, pemilihan bahan, serta keunikan yang membedakan karya Sutarjo dengan pengrajin lainnya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi langsung, wawancara mendalam dengan pengrajin, serta dokumentasi visual dari setiap tahap produksi. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis secara deskriptif untuk mengidentifikasi karakteristik bentuk, konstruksi, dan kualitas akustik instrumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan karakteristik dan dan proses produksi, untuk proses produksi terdiri atas pemilihan dan persiapan bahan, pembuatan body, neck, fingerboard, bridge, penggabungan dan pemasangan fret, dilanjutkan dengan pemasangan aksesoris, finishing, serta fitting up. Karakteristik fisik: penggunaan kayu mahoni untuk body, siprus untuk top, dan sono keling untuk fingerboard; bodi belakang dibuat sedikit cembung; bentuk lengkungan menyerupai gitar pada archtop; headstock berbentuk seperti mahkota bergelombang; bentuk lubang yang tidak konvensional serta penambahan stiker sebagai ciri khas. Secara akustik, cuk Sutarjo menghasilkan frekuensi dengan nada middle (246–392 Hz) dengan timbre hangat dan bulat, serta resonansi sustain yang panjang. Sedangkan cak menghasilkan frekuensi yang lebih tinggi yaitu (369–587 Hz) dengan timbre cerah (bright) dan resonansi cepat, menjadikannya kuat pada aksen ritmis. Penelitian ini memberikan berkontribusi pada pemahaman dan pengembangan musik keroncong, serta menjadi referensi bagi musisi, pendidik, dan pengrajin lain dalam meningkatkan kualitas instrumen melalui pemahaman teknik produksi dan pengaruh pemilihan material terhadap karakter suara. This research discusses the production characteristics of the cuk and cak instruments crafted by Sutarjo, a traditional musical instrument maker in Solo City. The study originates from the importance of preserving keroncong music, which is closely associated with the cuk and cak as part of Indonesia’s cultural identity. The objective of this research is to analyze the characteristics of Sutarjo’s cuk and cak, and to describe the production process, manufacturing techniques, material selection, and the unique features that distinguish his work from other craftsmen. The research method employed is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with the craftsman, and visual documentation of each production stage. The data obtained were then descriptively analyzed to identify the form, construction, and acoustic quality characteristics of the instruments. The findings show both the characteristics and production stages, which include material selection and preparation; construction of the body, neck, fingerboard, and bridge; assembly and fret installation; followed by the addition of accessories, finishing, and fitting up. The physical characteristics include the use of mahogany for the body, cypress for the top, and sonokeling for the fingerboard; a slightly convex back body; an archtop curve resembling that of a guitar; a crown-shaped wavy headstock; unconventional sound hole designs; and the addition of stickers as distinctive features. Acoustically, Sutarjo’s cuk produces frequencies in the middle range (246–392 Hz) with a warm and rounded timbre, along with a long sustain resonance. Meanwhile, the cak produces higher frequencies (369–587 Hz) with a bright timbre and fast resonance, making it effective in rhythmic accents. This research contributes to the understanding and development of keroncong music and serves as a reference for musicians, educators, and craftsmen in improving instrument quality through an understanding of production techniques and the influence of material selection on sound characteristics.
