Abstract
Sumedang Regency, West Java, is an area traversed by two of the active faults (Cileunyi–Tanjungsari Fault and Cipeles Fault), which are suspected to be the cause of the M=4.8 earthquake that occurred on December 31, 2023. This earthquake caused significant damage in five districts of Sumedang Regency, namely Cimalaka, North Sumedang, South Sumedang, Ganeas, and Situraja Districts. Approximately 238 houses were damaged, and 331 people were injured as a result of the earthquake. According to BMKG (2025), there are indications of unmapped active faults that are believed to have triggered the earthquake, highlighting the need for a study to understand the level of tectonic activity in the region. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the level of tectonic activity in the Cipeles sub-watershed, Sumedang Regency. The Cipeles sub-watershed was chosen as the study area because it crosses the five districts affected by the earthquake. The results of this study indicate that, out of the total 450 km² area of the Cipeles sub-watershed, 41.16 km² (9.15%) is categorized as having high tectonic activity, 76.53 km² (17.01%) as moderate, and 207.50 km² (46.11%) as low. These classifications cover 72.27% of the study area. The remaining 124.79 km² (27.73%) was not included in the classification as it lies outside the focus area of the sub-sub watershed analysis. These findings have important implications for disaster mitigation, particularly passive disaster mitigation, as they can serve as a basis for mapping earthquake-prone areas and assessing disaster characteristics resulting from tectonic activity. This is in line with BNPB Regulation No. 4 of 2008 and Presidential Regulation No. 93 of 2019, which emphasize the importance of thematic research and development in understanding disaster risk from both spatial and scientific perspectives, as an initial step in structural and non-structural mitigation in disaster-prone areas.
