Abstract
This study entitled The Use of Hedging in Political Discourse: The Third US Presidential Debate Barack Obama vs Mitt Romney in 2012 aims to investigate the use of hedging devices by each presidential candidate during the debate. In particular, this study investigates the functions of hedging devices used by each presidential candidate in relation to the concept of face. This study used a descriptive case study research design in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the language use in political rhetoric. The data were obtained from the transcription of the United States of America presidential debate on October 22nd, 2012. This study uses the theory of hedging proposed by Martín-Martín (2005, 2008) and Salager-Meyer (1997) to investigate the use of hedging devices, and the dimensions of face orientation developed by Ting-Toomey (1988, 1994, 2005) to investigate the functions of hedging devices in relation to the concept of face. The finding shows that Obama uses hedging devices in the form of epistemic modality (77.48%), the approximators of degree, quantity, frequency and time (11.71%), and the introductory phrases (10.81%). Similarly, Romney also frequently uses epistemic modality (74.62%), the approximators of degree, quantity, frequency and time (9.70%), and the introductory phrases (15.68%). The use of hedging devices by Obama and Romney emphasizes the necessity to protect the self’s reputation and to be approved by the interlocutor and/ or the people of the United States of America. Both politicians are also concerned about the need to set themselves free from the responsibility for a potential blame, the possible denial, rejection and violation of the interlocutor.------- Penelitian ini yang berjudul Penggunaan Hedging dalam Wacana Politik: Debat Kepresidenan Amerika Serikat Ketiga Barack Obama vs Mitt Romney di Tahun 2012 bertujuan untuk menyelidiki penggunaan perangkat hedging oleh masing-masing kandidat presiden selama debat. Secara khusus, penelitian ini menyelidiki fungsi-fungsi perangkat hedging yang digunakan oleh masing-masing kandidat presiden dalam kaitannya dengan konsep wajah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif studi kasus untuk mendapatkan pemahaman secara mendalam mengenai penggunaan bahasa dalam retorika politik. Data yang digunakan di dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dari transkrip debat kepresidenan Amerika Serikat pada 22 Oktober 2012. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori hedging yang diusulkan oleh Martín-Martín (2005, 2008) dan Salager-Meyer (1997) untuk menyelidiki penggunaan perangkat hedging, dan dimensi orientasi wajah yang dikembangkan oleh Ting-Toomey (1988, 1994, 2005) untuk menyelidiki fungsi-fungsi perangkat hedging dalam kaitannya dengan konsep wajah. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa Obama menggunakan perangkat hedging dalam bentuk epistemic modality (77.48%), the approximators of degree, quantity, frequency and time (11.71%), dan the introductory phrases (10.81%). Sama halnya, Romney juga kerap kali menggunakan epistemic modality (74.62%), the approximators of degree, quantity, frequency and time (9.70%), dan the introductory phrases (15.68%). Penggunaan perangkat hedging oleh Obama dan Romney menekankan pentingnya untuk melindungi reputasi diri sendiri dan untuk diterima oleh lawan bicara dan/ atau warga Amerika Serikat. Kedua politisi juga memedulikan kebutuhan untuk membebaskan diri dari tanggung jawab atas kemungkinan disalahkan, kemungkinan penolakan, dan pelecehan dari lawan bicara.
