Abstract

Keputusan untuk menjalani gaya hidup tanpa anak atau biasa disebut childfree di Indonesia mengalami peningkatan dalam beberapa tahun berakhir dan didominasi oleh para wanita karier. Fenomena ini muncul seiring dengan berkembangnya kesadaran individu terhadap hak dalam memilih gaya hidup yang sesuai dengan nilai dan prioritas pribadinya. Tidak hanya itu, childfree juga muncul dari perkembangan pemikiran feminis yang menekankan pada hak otonomi tubuh dan perlawanan terhadap norma tradisional yang menempatkan perempuan dalam peran domestik sebagai seorang istri dan seorang ibu. Meskipun demikian, keputusan tersebut masih dianggap tabu dan sering kali menghadapi tekanan sosial dan stigma negatif dari lingkungan sekitarnya. Maka dari itu, penting untuk mengkomunikasikan hal tersebut kepada keluarga sebagai upaya untuk menghadapi tekanan dan stigma negatif tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali bagaimana proses manajemen privasi komunikasi yang dilakukan oleh wanita karier dalam menyampaikan keputusan childfree kepada keluarga. Pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Adapun untuk pengumpulan data, penulis melakukan wawancara semi-terstruktur terhadap lima informan wanita karier childfree yang berasal dari Jakarta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses manajemen privasi ini dilakukan secara kompleks dan adaptif yang mana mencakup penetapan aturan privasi terhadap komunikan yang selektif, proses manajemen privasi komunikasi yang berlangsung dalam beberapa tahapan, hingga respons yang beragam saat turbulensi privasi terjadi. The decision to live a childfree lifestyle in Indonesia has increased in recent years and is predominantly embraced by career women. This phenomenon has emerged alongside the growing awareness of individuals regarding their rights to choose a lifestyle that aligns with their personal values and priorities. Moreover, the childfree choice is also rooted in the development of feminist thought, which emphasizes bodily autonomy and resistance against traditional norms that confine women to domestic roles as wives and mothers. Nevertheless, the decision remains taboo and is often met with social pressure and negative stigma from the surrounding environment. Therefore, it is crucial to communicate this decision to family members as an effort to cope with such pressures and stigmatization. This study aims to explore how career women manage communication privacy in conveying their childfree decision to their families. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed in this research. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five career women who identify as childfree and reside in Jakarta. The findings reveal that the process of communication privacy management is carried out in a complex and adaptive manner, encompassing the establishment of privacy rules toward selective communicants, the multi-stage process of communication privacy management, and the diverse responses that emerge when privacy turbulence occurs.
