Abstract
This study explores social character education within the Nurutni’ Ceremony of the Dayak Salako community in West Kalimantan through the lens of Performance Studies. The ceremony is understood as a form of social performance that both constructs and reproduces values of character education. The research is grounded in a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach and ethnographic method. Data were collected through participant observation in Dusun Pelanjau, semi-structured interviews with customary leaders, art practitioners, academics, and community members directly involved, supported by literature review, documentation, and visual records. Data analysis was conducted through processes of reduction, display, methodological triangulation, and conclusion drawing. The Nurutni’ Ceremony is a sacred rite occupying a central position in community life, functioning as a system of balance that harmonizes the dunio subayotn, dunio taino, and dunio kayat. Through symbols, prayers, and ritual actions, the community cultivates connections with the transcendental realm while simultaneously reinforcing social bonds. Intergenerational involvement in the ceremony fosters contextual, participatory, and experiential learning processes that serve as the foundation of ethnopedagogy. Findings indicate that the Nurutni’ Ceremony constitutes a collective educational space that strengthens social character education through embodied and intergenerational practices. Values such as tolerance, respect, mutual appreciation, cooperation, and social care are internalized through cultural practice and manifest in everyday life. This research contributes novelty by extending the application of Performance Studies into the domains of ethnopedagogy and character education, and by offering a new conceptual framework that positions traditional ceremonies as performative spaces of social character education. Furthermore, it advances contextual understanding of character education practices within the Dayak Salako community, an area rarely addressed in academic scholarship and provides practical contributions in the form of culture-based learning models relevant for strengthening character education while reinforcing cultural identity.
