Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis makna simbolik yang terkandung dalam Tari Heulang Ruyuk, sebuah tari kreasi baru yang diproduksi oleh Sanggar Kurawa Merdeka, dengan menggunakan pendekatan teori Semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce. Tarian ini terinspirasi dari karakteristik burung elang ruyuk (Spilornis cheela), yang merepresentasikan kekuatan, keberanian, kelincahan, dan kebebasan. Latar belakang penelitian ini didasarkan pada rendahnya pemahaman generasi muda terhadap makna dan simbol dalam pertunjukan seni tari, tari memiliki potensi besar sebagai sarana edukasi budaya dan pembentukan karakter. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif analisis. Teknik pengumpulan data meliputi observasi, wawancara mendalam, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa setiap elemen dalam Tari Heulang Ruyuk, gerak, tata busana, tata rias, properti, dan musik mengandung makna filosofis yang mendalam. Temuan gerakan yang dianalisis meliputi Gerak Meber Jangjang (melambangkan kesiapan dan keberanian), Gerak Gigibrig (melambangkan pertahanan dan reaksi cepat), Gerak Heulang Luncat (melambangkan kelincahan dan serangan mendadak), Gileuk Kiri dan Gileuk Kanan (melambangkan kehati-hatian dan pengamatan), serta Gambar Rengkuh Tungkul dan Ngaranggeum Mangsa (melambangkan kerendahan hati, penguasaan diri, dan kesadaran akan waktu dan peluang). Semua gerak ini dianalisis melalui konsep representamen, objek, dan interpretan dalam teori semiotika Peirce, serta diperkuat oleh konsep partial mimicri Desmond Morris. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Tari Heulang Ruyuk bukan hanya pertunjukan estetis, tetapi juga sarat dengan nilai-nilai seperti kepemimpinan, strategi, dan penghormatan terhadap alam, yang penting untuk diwariskan kepada generasi muda melalui pendekatan edukatif dan budaya. This research aims to analyze the symbolic meanings embedded in Tari Heulang Ruyuk, a contemporary dance created by Sanggar Kurawa Merdeka, through the lens of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. The dance is inspired by the characteristics of the crested serpent eagle (Spilornis cheela), symbolizing strength, courage, agility, and freedom. The study is motivated by the lack of appreciation and understanding among younger generations regarding the symbolic and philosophical messages in traditional dance, even though dance can serve as a powerful medium for cultural education and character development. A qualitative approach with descriptive-analytical methods was employed, and data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that each element of Tari Heulang Ruyuk—movement, costume, makeup, properties, and music—contains deep philosophical meanings. The observed movements include Meber Jangjang (representing readiness and bravery), Gigibrig (symbolizing defense and quick reaction), Heulang Luncat (indicating agility and sudden attack), Gileuk Kiri and Gileuk Kanan (symbolizing vigilance and observation), and Gambar Rengkuh Tungkul and Ngaranggeum Mangsa (representing humility, self-control, and awareness of time and opportunity). These movements were analyzed using Peirce’s triadic model of representamen, object, and interpretant, and further supported by Desmond Morris’s concept of partial mimicry to uncover the behavioral significance of movement. The study concludes that Tari Heulang Ruyuk is not merely an aesthetic performance but also a medium that conveys philosophical values such as leadership, strategy, and respect for nature. These values are essential for cultural transmission and educational development among the younger generation.
