Abstract
Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a chronic lung disease characterized by progressive airflow obstruction and associated with an abnormal inflammatory response to irritant particles or gases. Purpose: This study was to determine the application of pursed lip breathing technique on the respiratory status of COPD. Methods: This study was a case study through the application of intervention to one respondent in the internal medicine ward. The participant in this study was a 64-year-old patient with COPD and a minimum oxygen saturation level of 87%. Results: The intervention was conducted for three consecutive days, with two sessions per day lasting 15 minutes each. The average increase in oxygen saturation was 94%, and the respiratory rate was 22 breaths per minute. Conclusion: Pursed lip breathing performed routinely is an effective method for increasing oxygen saturation and reducing respiratory rate in COPD patients. Nurses can apply pursed lip breathing as an alternative collaboration, and in future studies, pursed lip breathing therapy can be made more efficient by comparing between groups.
