    Abstract

First-year students face academic and psychosocial transitions that require self-preparedness, thus necessitating a preventive approach that helps with emotional regulation and learning adaptation. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a bibliotherapy-based self-development program for first-year students in the Library and Information Science Study Program at UPI. The study employed a quantitative descriptive approach. Seventy students from the 2024 cohort who had attended bibliotherapy sessions participated in the study. Data were collected through a four-point Likert scale questionnaire containing 40 items covering ten aspects of self-development, namely intrapersonal, interpersonal, stress management, problem solving, self-awareness, learning ability, motivation, critical thinking, creativity, and self-confidence. The validity of the instrument was tested by an expert in the field of bibliotherapy. The results showed an overall effectiveness score of 88.73 percent, categorized as highly appropriate. In terms of aspects, higher scores were observed in interpersonal skills and learning skills, while creativity was the aspect with the lowest achievement but still fell within the appropriate category. These findings indicate that bibliotherapy through reading, reflection, and discussion contributes to strengthening the academic and psychological readiness of first-year students. The study recommends refining content that stimulates creativity, conducting pre- and post-program assessments, and designing follow-up studies that allow comparison with other interventions to strengthen the evidence of effectiveness. Theoretically, this study enriches the evidence of the effectiveness of bibliotherapy in higher education. Practically, these findings provide a reference for the development of a bibliotherapy service model across study programs in libraries and student affairs units.
