Abstract
This study aims to examine the meaning and symbols in the Samping Kebat Dance through an ethnochoreology approach. The Samping Kebat Dance is a new creative dance work with an epic lyric nature created by Rachmayati Nilakusumah (Neng Peking) which was born from personal experience and the traditions of the Sundanese people in Ciamis, especially related to the use of the sisi kebat cloth in the life cycle, from birth to death. The theoretical umbrella of the research uses Ethnochoreology, using a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The results of the study show that the meaning and symbols in the Samping Kebat Dance are reflected in the choreography, properties, make-up, costumes, and the use of distinctive internal music. This dance consists of three categories of movement, namely pure movement, meaningful movement (gesture), and movement from place to place (locomotion). Each element of the dance conveys the philosophy of life and spirituality of Sundanese women, such as steadfastness, purity, and the journey of life represented by the color and motif of the kebat cloth. Every element in this dance, be it movement, make-up, costume, or kebat cloth property, contains a deep philosophy that reflects the cycle of life from birth to death. This work shows that dance art can be a cultural language that conveys spiritual, personal, and social experiences in one unified performance.
