Abstract
Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh fenomena penggunaan musik sebagai media ekspresi dan penguatan kesehatan mental, khususnya di kalangan pendengar musik populer di Indonesia. Lagu Tutur Batin dipilih karena memiliki lirik yang sarat makna emosional, nilai penerimaan diri, dan solidaritas, yang relevan dengan dinamika psikologis masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap bagaimana khalayak memaknai lagu Tutur Batin melalui perspektif teori encoding/decoding Stuart Hall. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis resepsi. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam kepada sejumlah informan yang dipilih secara purposif. Wawancara berfokus pada pengalaman personal pendengar, interpretasi lirik, dan kaitannya dengan kondisi emosional mereka. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahapan transkripsi, kategorisasi, dan penafsiran sesuai model dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, dan oppositional reading. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa lagu Tutur Batin dipahami pendengar sebagai simbol kekecewaan, afirmasi dan penerimaan diri, proses penyembuhan emosional, serta sarana membangun kolektivitas dan solidaritas. Makna yang dihasilkan tidak bersifat tunggal, melainkan dipengaruhi oleh latar belakang, pengalaman hidup, dan kondisi psikologis masing-masing pendengar.Simpulan penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa musik populer dapat berfungsi sebagai medium komunikasi interpersonal dan terapi emosional yang efektif. Kontribusi penelitian ini terletak pada pengayaan kajian komunikasi musik dengan menyoroti peran musik dalam membentuk kesadaran diri dan jejaring sosial, sekaligus membuka peluang penerapan musik sebagai intervensi dalam pendidikan, konseling, dan penguatan komunitas. Kata Kunci: Musik populer; teori resepsi khalayak; penerimaan diri, kesehatan mental This study is motivated by the phenomenon of music being used as a medium for expression and mental health reinforcement, particularly among listeners of popular music in Indonesia. The song Tutur Batin was chosen for its emotionally rich lyrics, which convey messages of self-acceptance and solidarity, resonating with the psychological dynamics of society. This research aims to reveal how audiences interpret Tutur Batin through Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding theory. This study employs a qualitative approach using reception analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants, focusing on listeners’ personal experiences, lyrical interpretations, and their relation to emotional states. The data analysis process involved transcription, categorization, and interpretation following the dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional reading models. The findings indicate that Tutur Batin is perceived by listeners as a symbol of disappointment, affirmation, and self-acceptance, a means for emotional healing, as well as a tool to foster collectivity and solidarity. The interpretations are not singular, but rather shaped by each listener’s background, life experiences, and psychological condition. In conclusion, this research affirms that popular music can serve as an effective medium for interpersonal communication and emotional therapy. Its contribution lies in enriching the study of music communication by highlighting the role of music in fostering self-awareness and social networks, while opening opportunities for its application as an intervention tool in education, counseling, and community empowerment.
