    Abstract

This study examines how the practice of living together (cohabitation) reshapes societal meanings of marriage in the contemporary era. Specifically, it addresses three questions: (1) how unmarried individuals rationalize the decision to live together; (2) how this practice deconstructs the meaning of marriage; and (3) how it contributes to shifts in social values and norms. Using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach and in-depth interviews with 11 key informants across generations and members of the general public in Bandung, the research explores lived experiences and the socio-cultural contexts in which this practice occurs. The analysis is sharpened by Derrida’s deconstruction to interrogate the “legal/illegal” opposition and by rational choice theory to map actors’ utilitarian considerations. Findings: (RQ1) cohabitation is rationalized through perceived payoffs—cost/time efficiency, emotional comfort, and everyday logistics—as well as a “trial” function; decisions are also shaped by housing forms and locations that provide privacy. (RQ2) there is a partial substitution of family functions: emotional intimacy, domestic coordination, and some forms of social support can be “replicated,” whereas legally and religiously codified domains (child status, inheritance, legal protection) remain irreplaceable. (RQ3) normalization is contextual: factual (de facto) tolerance grows in urban/digital spaces and among certain generations, while institutions continue to enforce legal boundaries. These insights are synthesized in the T³ Model (Trial, Utilitarian Goals, Factual Tolerance), which explains why cohabitation persists: it functions as a relational try-out, yields practical benefits, and proceeds under tacit tolerance, yet remains constrained when formal rights and recognition are at stake. Theoretically, this study fills a gap in a literature still dominated by normative and moral approaches by offering a deconstructive, experience-based account of how the meaning of marriage is renegotiated in everyday life.
