Abstract
Perkembangan media sosial khususnya Instagram, telah mengubah cara mahasiswa berinteraksi dan mengelola identitas di lingkungan akademik digital. Fitur switching account memungkinkan pengguna memiliki lebih dari satu akun, termasuk fake account yang sering dimanfaatkan untuk menjaga privasi dan mengurangi tekanan sosial. Fenomena ini semakin relevan ketika tuntutan akademik menuntut keterbukaan di ruang digital, sementara sebagian mahasiswa ingin membatasi eksposur identitas pribadi. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengeksplorasi penggunaan fake account oleh mahasiswa sebagai strategi manajemen identitas digital, faktor pendorongnya, serta pengaruhnya terhadap deprivasi sosial di lingkungan akademik. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan campuran (mix method) dengan desain sequential exploratory, kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi dan kuantitatif dengan metode survei. Mewawancarai 7 narasumber dan menyebar angket kepada 96 responden. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan: (1) Mahasiswa memanfaatkan fake account di Instagram sebagai strategi manajemen identitas digital, di mana akun utama digunakan untuk citra formal akademik, sedangkan fake account memberi ruang bebas dan aman untuk ekspresi diri tanpa mengurangi keterlibatan akademik; (2) Fake account digunakan sebagai ruang alternatif untuk bebas berekspresi, menjaga privasi, menghindari tekanan sosial, meminimalkan distraksi, menjaga citra formal di akun utama, dan mengatasi rasa tidak percaya diri; (3) Pengaruh penggunaan fake account terhadap deprivasi sosial tergolong rendah dan tidak signifikan karena mahasiswa tetap mampu menjaga keterlibatan akademik dan hubungan sosial meskipun menggunakan identitas anonim. Penelitian ini berimplikasi pada peningkatan kesadaran tentang pengelolaan identitas digital melalui penggunaan fake account di lingkungan akademik, serta menjadi media edukasi dan refleksi mengenai peran fake account dalam menjaga privasi, mengurangi tekanan sosial, dan mempertahankan produktivitas akademik di era digital. The development of social media, especially Instagram, has changed the way students interact and manage their identities in the digital academic environment. The account switching feature allows users to have more than one account, including fake accounts, which are often used to maintain privacy and reduce social pressure. This phenomenon is increasingly relevant when academic demands demand openness in the digital space, while some students want to limit the exposure of their personal identities. This study aims to explore the use of fake accounts by students as a digital identity management strategy, the driving factors, and its influence on social deprivation in the academic environment. This study uses a mixed method approach with a sequential exploratory design, qualitative with phenomenological methods and quantitative with survey methods. Interviews were conducted with 7 informants and questionnaires were distributed to 96 respondents. The results of this study indicate: (1) Students utilize fake accounts on Instagram as a digital identity management strategy, where the main account is used for a formal academic image, while fake accounts provide a free and safe space for self-expression without reducing academic engagement; (2) Fake accounts are used as an alternative space for free expression, maintaining privacy, avoiding social pressure, minimizing distractions, maintaining a formal image on the main account, and overcoming self-doubt; (3) The effect of using fake accounts on social deprivation is relatively low and insignificant because students are still able to maintain academic engagement and social relationships even though they use anonymous identities. This research has implications for increasing awareness about digital identity management through the use of fake accounts in academic environments, as well as being a medium for education and reflection regarding the role of fake accounts in maintaining privacy, reducing social pressure, and maintaining academic productivity in the digital era.
