    Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between exposure to the comedy series ”Mutant” on the Tretan Universe YouTube channel and the formation of stigma toward individuals with disabilities among Generation Z in Bandung City. The series’s approach to equal-humor representation is posited as a challenge to the negative stereotypes commonly perpetuated by mainstream media. Employing a descriptive-correlational quantitative methodology, the research involved 384 respondents purposively sampled from the 16–24 age range. Data were collected through a four-point Likert scale online questionnaire and analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test to compare group differences, and Spearman’s rank correlation to examine variable correlations Findings reveal that most respondents experience moderate to frequent exposure to the content and demonstrate a tendency toward positive transformation of the stigma. Respondents who frequently viewed the series exhibited significantly lower stigma levels than those with rare exposure, indicating notable differences in perception. Additionally, Spearman’s analysis identified a moderate positive association between frequency/engagement with the content and stigma reduction, suggesting that increased exposure and participatory viewing foster more inclusive attitudes. The study highlights the potential of repeated exposure to content that portrays people with disabilities as equals, employing dark humor and participatory interaction to reduce social distance, shift public sentiment from pity to rights-based appreciation, and create discursive spaces for equality. Recommendations include collaborative initiatives among content creators, educators, and advocacy organizations to expand educational entertainment, elevate critical media literacy, and refine platform policies to amplify positive disability narratives. Future research is encouraged to examine mediating variables, such as empathy and direct experiences, to deepen the understanding of digital media’s cultivation effects on inclusive attitudes and to design culturally adaptive approaches for Indonesian society.
