Abstract

Fenomena munculnya figur-figur yang merepresentasikan maskulinitas melalui media seperti Thomas Shelby dalam TV Series ‘Peaky Blinders’ di era digital ini mempengaruhi para penonton khususnya pada laki-laki dalam memaknai maskulinitas yang ideal, salah satunya aspek kemandirian yang sering dikaitkan dengan indikator kemaskulinan seseorang. Dengan menggunakan metode kuantitatif komparatif korelasional, studi ini mengkaji hubungan antara Independent Self-Construal (ISC) dan Perceived Masculinity (PM) pada 171 responden pria kelompok adolescence dan 191 responden dari kelompok young adulthood. Ditemukan perbedaan fundamental pada hubungan kedua variabel di antara kedua kelompok usia. Pada kelompok adolescence, terdapat hubungan positif yang signifikan, hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa pada masa remaja, kemandirian merupakan konsep yang terkait dengan persepsi maskulinitas sebagai cara menegaskan identitas mereka. Sementara pada kelompok young adulthood tidak ditemukan hubungan yang signifikan secara statistik, menunjukkan bahwa pada masa dewasa muda, konstruk diri menjadi lebih mapan dan persepsi maskulinitas menjadi lebih fleksibel, tidak lagi terikat kuat pada konsep kemandirian. Perbedaan ini terbukti signifikan secara statistik, menunjukkan bahwa hubungan antara konsep diri dan persepsi maskulinitas tidak statis, melainkan sebuah proses yang berkembang seiring tahapan usia. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi teoretis bagi studi psikologi sosial, perkembangan, dan gender, serta secara praktis menjadi landasan referensi untuk pengembangan program edukasi yang dapat membantu kaum muda dalam membentuk identitas diri yang sehat, serta meningkatkan literasi media agar mereka dapat menyikapi representasi maskulinitas secara kritis. The phenomenon of the emergence of figures who represent masculinity through the media, such as Thomas Shelby in the TV Series ‘Peaky Blinders’ in this digital era affects the audience, especially men, in interpreting the ideal of masculinity, one of which is the aspect of independence that is often associated with indicators of a person's masculinity. By using correlational comparative quantitative methods, this study examined the relationship between Independent Self-Construal (ISC) and Perceived Masculinity (PM) in 171 male respondents from the adolescence group and 191 respondents from the young adulthood group. The fundamental differences were found in the relationship of the two variables between the two age groups. In the adolescence group, there is a significant positive relationship, this indicates that in adolescence, independence is a concept associated with the perception of masculinity as a way of asserting their identity. While in the young adulthood group no statistically significant relationship was found, suggesting that in young adulthood, the self-construct becomes more established and the perception of masculinity becomes more flexible, no longer strongly tied to the concept of independence. This difference proved to be statistically significant, showing that the relationship between self-construal and the perception of masculinity is not static but rather a process that evolves with the stages of age. This research provides a theoretical contribution to the study of social, developmental, and gender psychology, as well as a practical reference base for the development of educational programs that can help young people in forming a healthy self-identity, as well as improve media literacy so that they can address the representation of masculinity critically.
