Abstract
This study examines the verbal expressions of the Sasak language in the levels of customary groups based on social class, such as the utami, madya, and niste/jajar karang levels in the sorong serah aji krame tradition. This study examines the gender representation in the sorong serah aji krame speech, which is characterized by both male and female language features. This study aims to identify verbal expressions based on customary levels and describe the locutionary, illocutionary, and language features of men and women in the sorong serah aji krame speech. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data in the form of verbal expressions of the Sasak language in the sorong serah aji krame tradition obtained through recordings, documentation, and interviews. The process of identifying locutionary and illocutionary acts uses Searle's theory (1979), while the analysis of language features uses Lakoff's theory (1975) for female language features and Mulac's theory for male language features. (2001). The results of the analysis reveal two levels of customary groups in the verbal expression of sorong serah aji krame, namely the utami (main) level and niste/jajar karang (ordinary). Based on these two levels, types of declarative and imperative locutionary acts were found, as well as types of assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive illocutionary acts. Next, a total of 75 male language features and female language features were found, with a division of 45 data for pembayun pisolo (male) and 29 data for penampi (female). From these data, 10 language features were identified that reflect differences in verbal expression between men and women in the sorong serah aji krame procession. These language features consist of 5 male language features, including: References to quantity, Judgemental adjectives, Directives, Locatives, and “I” reference, and 5 female language features consisting of: Super Polite Forms, Emphatic Stress, Lexical Hedges, Intensifiers, and Rising Intonation on Declaratives. These findings provide insight into linguistic variations related to gender roles in traditional communication.
