Abstract

Membangkitkan semangat toleransi dan peduli sosial dapat dilakukan melalui pendidikan karakter yang diimplementasikan dalam institusi pendidikan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan dan mengetahui secara mendalam tentang realitas sikap toleransi dan peduli sosial siswa, proses pembinaan toleransi dan peduli sosial, faktor-faktor pendukung dan penghambat proses pembinaan, dan upaya pihak sekolah dalam pembinaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus dan data-data diperoleh melalui teknik wawancara mendalam, observasi, studi literatur, dan studi dokumentasi. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 4 Balikpapan. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa: 1) Realitas sikap toleransi yang ditunjukkan siswa ditandai dengan: menghargai pendapat orang lain baik dalam proses pembelajaran di kelas maupun ketika rapat kegiatan ekstrakurikuler; bersahabat tanpa membedakan suku dan agama; sikap saling menghargai dan menghormati orang lain, mengendalikan emosi dan mudah memaafkan, tidak mengejek teman. Sedangkan realitas sikap peduli sosial yang ditunjukkan oleh siswa ditandai dengan merancang dan melakukan berbagai kegiatan sosial, menghormati petugas-petugas sekolah, saling membantu, menjenguk teman yang sakit, dan melayat apabila ada orang tua siswa meninggal. 2) Proses pembinaan toleransi dan peduli sosial siswa dilakukan melalui pembelajaran PKn di kelas, kegiatan ekstrakurikuler, dan pembiasaan di lingkungan sekolah. 3) Faktor-faktor penunjang dalam proses pembinaan toleransi dan peduli sosial siswa yaitu kebijakan dinas dan kepala sekolah, pedoman kurikulum, kebersamaan warga sekolah, sarana dan prasarana, lingkungan, komitmen sekolah, lingkungan, dan kegiatan ekstrakurikuler. Faktor-faktor penghambat proses pembinaan toleransi dan peduli sosial; masih kurangnya kesadaran dari diri siswa akan pentingnya bertoleransi dan peduli sosial dalam kehidupan; dan masih ada beberapa pihak yang tidak ikut berpartisipasi dan bekerja. 4) Upaya yang dilakukan pihak sekolah dalam proses pembinaan toleransi dan peduli sosial siswa yaitu lebih maksimal dalam mengembangkan toleransi dan peduli sosial pada diri siswa di berbagai kegiatan, lebih terstruktur dalam penyusunan program, alokasi dana dan alokasi waktu, menghargai dan memberikan perlakuan yang sama terhadap seluruh warga sekolah, memfasilitasi kegiatan yang bersifat sosial secara lebih optimal, melibatkan pihak lain dan melakukan koordinasi yang berkesinambungan antara kepala sekolah, guru, dan orang tua. Rekomendasi penelitian ini adalah perlu pembinaan toleransi dan peduli sosial melalui berbagai kegiatan di sekolah untuk membentuk dan memantapkan watak kewarganegaraan siswa. The revival of the spirit of tolerance and social care can be done through character education implemented in educational institutions. This study aims to reveal and to find out in depth about the reality of students’ tolerance and social care, the process of the construction of the tolerance and social care, the supporting and inhibiting factors of the development process. This study applies a qualitative approach with case study methods and data obtained through in-depth interview techniques, observation, literature study, and study documentation. This research is done in the public high school state (SMAN) 4 Balikpapan East Kalimantan. The results of the study reveals that; 1) the reality of the students’ tolerance is characterized by; respecting others’ opinions both in the learning process in the classroom or when meeting extracurricular activities; making friends regardless of race and religion; having mutual respect and respecting for others; controlling emotions and forgiving; not mocking friends. While the reality of the students’ social care is shown by designing and conducting social activities, respecting the school staffs, helping each other, visiting friend hospitalized, and making a visit of condolence. 2) The process of the construction of development of students’ tolerance and social care is conducted through teaching civics in the classroom, extracurricular activities, and habituation in the school environment. 3) The supporting factors in the process of fostering the students’ tolerance and social care is the government policy and principals, curriculum guidelines, the school community, school infrastructure, environment, commitment to school, and axtracurricular activities. The inhibiting factors of the development of the tolerance and social care is still a lack of awareness of the importance of the students’ self-tolerance and social care in life; and still there are those who do not participate and work together. 4) The efforts of the school in the process of fostering the students tolerance and social care are more leverage in developing tolerance and social care on students in various activities, more structured in the preparation of the program, the allocation of funds and the allocation of time, appreciate and give equal treatment to the entire school community, facilitate social activities in a more optimal, involving others and continuous coordination among the principal, teachers, and parents. The recommendation of this study is the need of constructing the tolerance and social care through a variety of activities in schools to build and strengthen the character of the students’ civis disposition.
