Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on impostor syndrome in adolescents, with self-esteem as a mediating variable. The research background focuses on the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), low self-esteem, and the tendency for impostor syndrome to emerge in adolescents. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. A total of 423 adolescents aged 12 until 21 years old participated in this study through accidental sampling and completed online questionnaires. The instruments used include the Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire (ACEQ), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS). Data were analyzed using simple and multiple regression analyses, path analysis, and the Sobel test. The result indicated that ACEs had a significant effect on impostor syndrome (p < 0,05), ACEs significantly affected self-esteem (p < 0,05), and self-esteem significantly affected impostor syndrome (p < 0,05). The path analysis and Sobel test further showed that self-esteem significantly mediated the relation between ACEs and impostor syndrome, with the mediation being partial. These findings indicate that the higher the level of adverse childhood experiences, the lower the level of adolescent’s self-esteem, which in turn increases their tendency to experience impostor syndrome.
