Abstract
This thesis is titled “Jaipongan Dance Education for Students with Down Syndrome at the Padepokan Sekar Panggung Studio.” The background of this research stems from the importance of providing adaptive education services for children with special needs, especially those with Down Syndrome, through the approach of dance. Jaipongan dance, as a traditional art form of West Java, not only has aesthetic value but also pedagogical potential to develop students' motor, cognitive, social, and emotional aspects. However, teaching dance to students with Down Syndrome in a non-formal environment still faces challenges, both in terms of the competence of the trainers, the learning strategies, and the evaluation methods used. The research questions in this study include: (1) what are the competencies of trainers/teachers of students with Down Syndrome at the Padepokan Sekar Panggung Studio in Cimahi City, (2) what Jaipongan dance learning strategies are applied to students with Down Syndrome at the Padepokan Sekar Panggung Studio in Cimahi City, and (3) how the results of Jaipongan dance learning are evaluated for students with Down Syndrome at the Padepokan Sekar Panggung Studio in Cimahi City. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data was obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research method used was a case study method with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques used observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that: (1) coaches have adaptive pedagogical competencies, are professionals in the field of dance, have social competencies, personality, and an understanding of the non-formal context. Trainers have an attitude of equality in learning by not discriminating between regular students and students with Down syndrome. (2) Learning strategies include repetition of movement material, positive reinforcement, and a personal approach to students with Down syndrome, which have been proven effective in increasing student engagement through the use of imitative methods, drills, and peer tutoring. The trainer acts as a facilitator and motivator who strives to establish communication through the application of compassion, providing tireless learning, constantly praising students with Down syndrome. The presence of students with Down syndrome is well accepted by regular students, who, despite initially feeling hesitant or afraid due to their experience of witnessing students with Down syndrome having tantrums, eventually feel comfortable due to the approach used by the trainer. This reinforces that Jaipong dance learning at the Sekar Panggung dance studio has great potential in building an inclusive and empathetic society. (3) Learning evaluation emphasizes process over results, with evaluation conducted through observation, simple assessment rubrics, and individual progress notes.
