    Abstract

Penggunaan sedotan plastik sekali pakai menjadi penyumbang signifikan pencemaran lingkungan akibat sulit terurai. The use of single-use plastic straws significantly contributes to environmental pollution due to their non-biodegradable nature. This study aims to develop biodegradable straws based on Eucheuma cottonii and arrowroot starch (Maranta arundinacea) as an alternative to reduce plastic waste. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was applied with eight treatments, consisting of one control (K1) and seven formulation variations (F1–F7). The evaluation included ISO 5424:2022 testing, organoleptic analysis, and biodegradation assessment using the soil burial method with EM4. The best formulation was obtained in F7 (5 g Eucheuma cottonii, 60 g arrowroot starch, 5 g calcium lactate, 5 g sodium alginate, 25 ml glycerol, and 500 ml water), which met two ISO 5424:2022 criteria: wall thickness ratio of 1 and damage level of 0. F7 also exhibited a density of 41.07 kg/m³, water absorption of 60% at the 60th minute, and a moisture content of 11.32%. The highest organoleptic score (25.2) was recorded in terms of appearance, aroma, texture, suction ease, puncture ease, and aftertaste. Biodegradation testing showed that F7 experienced a mass loss of 80.55% within 10 days, significantly faster compared to conventional plastic straws. Overall, the study demonstrates that the F7 formulation successfully produced biodegradable straws with optimal physical, mechanical, sensory, and degradation properties, making it a promising alternative to single-use plastic straws.
