Abstract

This study was a historical research that examined the riot against Chinese occurred in Jatiwangi, February 1998. This study was based on the awareness of how anarchistic actions that happened around the time of 1998 had raised the issue of racism among ethnic groups in Indonesia, in which one of them involved a Chinese group in Jatiwangi. The discussion of this study was focused on the circumstances that triggered the riot to occur in the first place. The aim was to discover and describe the detailed events of the occurrence of the incident. Through a four-stage historical method, it has been revealed that the riot was caused by four main reasons; the economic discrepancy between Chinese and civilians, the lack of empathy from the majority of Chinese, the scarcity of the people’s basic needs, and the mass forcible dispersal by the authorities. The three-day riot that took place in 1998 from February 12 to 14 had brought about traumatic experiences and financial loss to the victims, both Chinese and civilians. During the incident, many properties of Chinese, including stores, houses, and even worship places had been damaged and destroyed by the anarchists. Reflecting to these facts, the incident was considered stemming from as well as increasing discrimination and racism issues among tribes, religions, races, and ethnic groups. Therefore, in order to avoid the incident from spreading, Indonesian government released a regulation—Undang-Undang No. 40 Tahun 2008—about the abolition of any kind of discrimination and racism practices. Based on the findings of this study, it was suggested for the future research to examine more on the involvement and the roles of Zoker during the riot in Jatiwangi as this study found it essential.
