Abstract
Kata kunci: Dietary Inflammatory Index, depresi, mahasiswa, sedentary behaviour ABSTRACT Background: The prevalence of depression among adolescents and young adults in Indonesia continues to rise. Data from Riskesdas (2018) indicate an increase in emotional mental disorders, including depression, in Bandung City from 3.0% in 2013 to 7.7% in 2018. Other studies suggest that university students represent a population with the highest prevalence of depression (22.2–40.2%). However, most research has primarily focused on psychosocial factors, with limited exploration of lifestyle factors such as pro-inflammatory dietary patterns and sedentary behaviour. Objective: This study aims to examine the correlation between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) scores and depressive symptoms among university students. Methods: This research used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The participants consisted of 54 students from various universities in Bandung City, selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected online using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) to calculate DII scores via online interviews, the Sedentary Behaviour Questionnaire (SBQ) to measure sedentary duration, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess depressive symptoms via Google Forms. Data were analysed using Spearman correlation tests. Results: A significant correlation was found between DII scores and depressive symptoms, with a weak correlation strength (r = 0.315; p = 0.020). Conclusion: There is a correlation between dietary patterns with high inflammatory potential and an increase in depressive symptoms among university students. The prevention and management of depression within this population should incorporate diet-based interventions and further investigate additional contributing factors beyond dietary patterns and physical activity.
