Abstract

This research aims to describe a STEAM-based coding extracurricular activity in facilitating the development of 21st-century skills in early childhood at Joy Kids National Plus Kindergarten. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research findings indicate that the coding extracurricular program, implemented since 2022, adopts a STEAM approach and utilizes Gigo tools to stimulate logical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills in 5-6 year old children through interactive and creative activities lasting 60 minutes each week. Program planning involved teacher training, socialization to parents, and the development of a flexible and responsive curriculum. The integration of the STEAM approach proved to support children's cognitive, social, emotional, and motor development through activities such as constructing robot paths, evaluating errors, and engaging in discussions. Program evaluation was conducted formatively and informally through direct observation. Despite limited facilities in terms of the number of tools, teachers were able to manage activities to ensure all children could participate actively. Overall, this coding extracurricular activity can facilitate four 21st-century skills in children in a balanced manner according to their developmental stage. Efforts to facilitate these skills are realized through the design of activities that actively challenge children to solve problems (critical thinking), generate new ideas through coding media (creativity), work together to achieve goals (collaboration), and communicate their ideas effectively (communication).
