Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami fenomena penggunaan bahasa toxic di kalangan mahasiswa yang tergabung dalam komunitas pencinta gaming di forum Discord Motion Ime. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang menjadi penyebab penggunaan bahasa toxic di kalangan mahasiswa anggota forum tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kasus dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara, observasi, dan studi literatur. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan beberapa faktor utama yang menjadi pemicu penggunaan bahasa toxic di kalangan mahasiswa, yaitu: (a) Sulit menerima keadaan, terutama saat mengalami kekalahan dalam bermain game, yang sering kali memicu luapan emosi dalam bentuk bahasa kasar. (b) Pengaruh dari YouTuber gaming, di mana banyak mahasiswa meniru perilaku dan gaya komunikasi YouTuber yang kerap menggunakan bahasa toxic. Mereka menganggap penggunaan bahasa ini sebagai sesuatu yang lumrah dan bagian dari kesenangan dalam komunitas gaming. (c) Provokasi dari komentar viewers, di mana mahasiswa merasa terdorong untuk membalas komentar buruk dengan bahasa serupa, memperburuk interaksi di forum. (d) Rasa kecewa atau ketidakpuasan yang muncul ketika video yang mereka tonton tiba-tiba berakhir, juga menjadi pemicu ledakan emosi dalam bentuk bahasa toxic. This study aims to understand the phenomenon of toxic language use among university students who are part of the gaming community in the Discord Motion Ime forum. The objective of this research is to identify the factors that cause toxic language use among the student members of the forum. This research employs a case study method with data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and literature studies. The findings reveal several key factors that trigger the use of toxic language among students: (a) Difficulty in accepting situations, especially when experiencing losses in gaming, which often leads to emotional outbursts in the form of harsh language. (b) The influence of gaming YouTubers, where many students imitate the behavior and communication style of YouTubers who frequently use toxic language. They perceive this language use as normal and part of the fun within the gaming community. (c) Provocation from viewers' comments, where students feel compelled to respond to negative comments with similar toxic language, exacerbating interactions in the forum. (d) Disappointment or dissatisfaction that arises when the videos they watch abruptly end, also triggers emotional outbursts in the form of toxic language.
