Abstract
This thesis is titled "The Development of the Paralympic Games 2001 – 2021". The Paralympic Games have undergone significant development, initially created as a platform for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities, and later evolving into an international sporting event that provides athletes with disabilities the opportunity to achieve the highest levels of performance. This research is motivated by the author's interest in the field of sports, particularly sports for people with disabilities, which remains relatively underrepresented. The aim of this study is to offer a deeper understanding of the Paralympic Games and their benefits for people with disabilities. The research methodology used is the historical method, employing six research steps according to Helius Sjamsuddin, which are simplified into heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the study indicate that the Paralympic Games were initially established by Dr. Guttmann as a rehabilitation event for war veterans. The Paralympics later experienced significant growth, particularly during the 2000s, with the number of participants reaching 4,000 athletes and 22 sports disciplines being contested. The Paralympics also faced various challenges, such as incidents of cheating and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Nevertheless, the Paralympic Games have had a positive impact both on people with disabilities and on the host countries. Indonesian athletes achieved their greatest success at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics by winning two gold medals, ending a 40-year wait for a gold medal. This research is expected to serve as a reference for future studies in the same field.
