HUBUNGAN PARASOCIAL RELATIONSHIP DAN SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING PADA WIBU GEN Z DI INDONESIA

Ailsa Dahayu Carissa, - (2024) HUBUNGAN PARASOCIAL RELATIONSHIP DAN SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING PADA WIBU GEN Z DI INDONESIA. S1 thesis, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.

Abstract

Meski demikian, kepuasan hidup wibu cenderung rendah. The “weebs” are often known for their tendency to have imaginary partners from anime. This imaginary relationship, also known as “parasocial relationship,” has sparked concern and raised negative assumptions towards weebs, especially regarding their well-being. This research aims to study weebs in a more positive light to see if there is any correlation between parasocial relationships and subjective well-being. Using quantitative method and non-probability sampling technique (convenience sampling), this research was conducted in Indonesia and managed to gather 460 Gen Z weebs age 14–29. This research used the Indonesian version of SWLS and SPANE from Diener to measure subjective well-being. As for parasocial relationships, a translated version of MPSR from Tukanchisky is used. The results show no significant correlation between parasocial relationships and subjective well-being, in which it provided different findings compared to the theories and previous research articles. The difference in culture, narrative media, and the unique sample might contribute to the difference in this finding. Though the proposed hypothesis was proven untrue, this research still produced other new findings. Results show that weebs have high parasocial relationship intensity, proving in accordance with previous findings. Weebs also generally have a high subjective well-being with high positive affect frequencies, though they generally have lower life satisfaction.
