Abstract
This study aims to provide information on the analysis of difficulties based on the errors made by students in solving mathematical word problems related to flat shapes using the Newman Procedure, a method for analyzing errors in problem solving. The study has two main objectives: (1) to understand the difficulties based on the errors made by students in solving mathematical word problems according to the Newman Procedure and (2) to identify the factors causing students' errors in solving mathematical word problems using the Newman Procedure. Qualitative and descriptive approaches were used. Data were collected using tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The study involved 24 fourth-grade students, with three selected for interviews based on the criterion of making numerous errors. Each subject was interviewed regarding their work results. Data analysis using the Newman Procedure revealed that the types of errors made by the students were reading errors at 0.51%, understanding errors at 2.5%, transformation errors at 16.24%, process skill errors at 39.5%, and encoding errors at 41.63%. Based on the scoring results, the average student score was 52%, indicating that students' ability to solve mathematical word problems based on the types of errors according to NEA was categorized as poor.
