Abstract
Communication skills are required to exchange concepts, signals, thoughts, and emotions during a conversation. It is closely linked to cognitive abilities to organize knowledge, thoughts, ideas, and information. However, people have differences in linguistic ability, particularly in terms of giving cognitive responses. For individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), it can be difficult for them to give responses during a conversation in a social context, regardless of age—adults or teenagers. Through actual case documentaries, this study aims to discover whether there are differences in the kinds of cognitive responses produced by adult and teenage autistic individuals. This study used a qualitative approach to examine the cognitive response types produced by both subjects by using Rothwell's (2000) theory of Central Coherence Deficit. The purpose is to identify the types of cognitive responses produced, the differences that occurred, and how they relate to social contexts. The results show there were few differences between the two subjects' responses. The autistic adult produced the same amount of CR and CDI, with CI being the least frequent. An autistic teenager also produced CI the least frequently, but CDI occurs less than CR. This result presentation was influenced by the social context’s factors, including setting, subject, and topic of the conversation. The results of social context relation were discussed in further detail in this paper.
