Abstrak
Tradisi Mbaba Belo Selambar adalah tradisi awal dalam pernikahan adat Karo yang
berfungsi untuk menanyakan kesediaan seorang gadis dan keluarganya. Penelitian
ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan proses, simbol, dan makna dari Tradisi Mbaba Belo
Selambar di kota Bandung menggunakan kajian semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce.
Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian deskriptif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan
dengan observasi, dokumentasi, dan wawancara. Data dianalisis menggunakan
teori segitiga makna Charles Sanders Peirce yang mengaitkan representamen,
objek, dan interpretan. Simpulan dari hasil Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa
proses Tradisi Mbaba Belo Selambar terbagi menjadi dua tahap, yaitu tahap
prapelaksanaan (arih-arih) dan pelaksanaan (Mbaba Belo Selambar). Terdapat 18
simbol dalam Tradisi Mbaba Belo Selambar, yaitu kampil, belo ras kuhna, isap ras
korek, uis nipes, beka buluh, kampuh, amak mentar, pudun, dan penindih pudun,
cimpa, wajid, gula-gula, gulen manuk cipera, teh manis, kopi, sukut, kalimbubu,
dan anak beru. Peralatan yang digunakan didominasi dengan makna kehormatan
yakni menghormati seluruh pihak keluarga yang hadir.

Abstract
The Tradition of Mbaba Belo Selambar is an early tradition in Karo customary
marriage that functions to inquire about the willingness of a girl and her family.
This study aims to describe the process, symbols, and meanings of the Mbaba Belo
Selambar Tradition in Bandung city using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic
theory. This research is a descriptive study. Data collection was conducted through
observation, documentation, and interviews. The data were analyzed using Peirce's
theory of the triangle of meaning, which links the representamen, object, and
interpretant. The conclusion drawn from the results of this research shows that the
Mbaba Belo Selambar Tradition process is divided into two stages: the pre�execution stage (arih-arih) and the execution stage (Mbaba Belo Selambar). There
are 18 symbols in the Mbaba Belo Selambar Tradition, namely kampil, belo ras
kuhna, isap ras korek, uis nipes, beka buluh, kampuh, amak mentar, pudun, and
penindih pudun, cimpa, wajid, candy, chicken liver candy, sweet tea, coffee, sukut,
kalimbubu, and anak beru. The equipment used is predominantly laden with the
meaning of honor, which respects all attending family members.
