Abstract

Research papers are the predominant type of written communication in the academic area to transmit information. Producing a research paper necessitates following a sequence of rhetorical structures to effectively communicate ideas and enhance the research quality, credibility, and influence. This study aims to investigate the moves and steps used by researchers to write research articles that are highly cited and published in international journals indexed in Scopus. This rhetorical study used a combination of frameworks proposed by Hyland (2000), Swales (2004), Cotos et al. (2017), and Moreno and Swales (2018) to analyze each section. A corpus of 30 articles was purposively collected from the Scopus database. The chosen framework was applicable to analyze the data and the rhetorical structure of the corpus. The findings of rhetorical moves in the corpus create a new model derived from previous research that can be used in the field of psychology. The results of this study indicate that certain rhetorical moves and steps are regularly used by academics who write highly cited psychological research papers that are indexed in Scopus. The conventional moves for the abstract section are introduction, purpose, product (result), and conclusion. Moreover, six conventional move-steps for the introduction section: establishing a territory with a step topic generalizations of increasing specificity; establishing a niche with indicating a gap; and presenting the present work by announcing present research descriptively and/or purposively. Furthermore, a conventional move must appear in the method section which is describing the study by describing the experimental or study procedures. Finally, six conventional move-steps appear for the result, discussion, and conclusion sections. Such move-steps consist of background information with restating key features of the study, summarizing or restating key results and presenting results neutrally, summarizing or restating key results and highlighting result, commenting on key results or other features and establishing the meaning of results, commenting on key results or other features and explaining results or discussing effect, drawing implications and making recommendations for future research or practice.
