Abstract
In the construction of news narratives, linguistic elements such as clauses are pivotal in organizing the information and conveying the message. This study explores elements of clauses in news media reporting about the Gaza conflict. This study aims to discover how JakartaPost and BBC News use their clause structure patterns in their news articles to deliver their intended meaning. A qualitative research design involving textual analysis in news reports was used, and Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar theory of clause complex was incorporated to analyze six news articles with similar topics broadcasted in the two media. The complex clauses found in the news articles were identified and analyzed based on the system of interdependency and logico-semantic relations following the clause complex theory proposed by Halliday and Matthiesen (2014), Eggins (2004), as well as Gerot and Wignel (1995). The analysis reveals that both news media are in favor of using hypotaxis relation, and while JakartaPost uses elaboration and locution more dominantly, BBC News more frequently uses extension and locution relation to connect the clauses in the news articles. This finding also shows that while JakartaPost tends to prioritize clarity and detailed news reporting, BBC News tends to highlight dynamic and multifaceted news reporting in delivering the topic of the Gaza conflict. This study suggests that clause complexes in news discourse present logical functions to show how intended meaning can be encoded in the construction of ideas.
