Abstract

Sound art is an interdisciplinary approach towards art that integrates sound, installations, and new media, with sound functioning as a metaphor rather than merely an abstraction. In Indonesia, artists have employed research based approach within sound art to address socio-environmental issues. Their distinctive engagement with drone within the realm of sound art positions them as a pertinent subject for scholarly investigation. The primary aim of this research is to explore the phenomena of drone in Indonesian sound art. This study utilizes a phenomenological research methodology. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, observations through listening and seeing, and a review of relevant literature. The data was also analysed and interpreted through manual coding the interviews. Through this analysis, various themes and subthemes emerged. Key themes were identified like the Innovation with drone, Aesthetic and Experiential qualities of Drone and the cultural context of drone in sound art in Indonesia. The study analysed the art based research and artistic approaches employed by Indonesian sound artists in integrating drone elements in their artwork. The study understood the impact of technological advancements for the production of drone in these artworks, investigating the role of technology in shaping sonic identities and innovation using drone. Further, the research enquired into the implementation of Listening as an approach towards creating immersive and therapeutic experience for the audience. The observation delved into indicators like resonance, minimalism, dynamics, texture, colour, space, environment, reverberation, echo, embodiment and other aspects of drone, from the perspective of author and audience. The study offers insights into how drone can create immersive and meditative atmospheres for listeners. Lastly the research understand the perspective of culture influencing the sound artists in Indonesia. The study understands the cultural background and philosophical understandings of the sound artists. The research inquired into the influences impacting the sound artists to create drone based sound art. The results of the study were Innovation through drone, Aesthetic and Experiential quality of drone and cultural influences in drone based sound art. Indonesian artists have been actively creating sound art, fusing their philosophical and cultural underpinnings with contemporary technology, while addressing the environmental issues faced by them, which makes this research a novelty.
