Abstract

Membaca pemahaman adalah kegiatan memahami suatu bacaan yang melibatkan pengetahuan atau pengalaman pembaca kemudian dihubungkan dengan isi teks bacaan. Kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks bahasa Inggris harus dikuasai oleh siswa sebagai salah satu tujuan kompetensi yang harus dicapai. Namun berdasarkan observasi yang dilakukan, menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks bahasa Inggris masih sangat rendah. Penelitian tentang efektivitas penerapan strategi know, want to know, learned terhadap kemampuan membaca pemahaman bahasa Inggris siswa SD ini mempunyai tujuan untuk mendapatkan gambaran mengenai penerapan strategi KWL terhadap kemampuan membaca pemahaman pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pre eksperimen desain pre-test post-test dengan populasi siswa kelas VA SDN 3 Mekarsari di Kecamatan Banjar Kota Banjar. Sampel adalah seluruh siswa kelas VA SDN 3 Mekarsari yang dipilih berdasarkan pertimbangan sampling jenuh, yaitu berjumlah 28 orang. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah soal tes awal (pre-test), soal tes akhir (post-test), dan lembar observasi. Hasil penelitian diperoleh bahwa: (1) rata-rata kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks bahasa Inggris siswa sebelum diterapkan strategi KWL berada pada kategori sedang; (2) rata-rata kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks bahasa Inggris siswa setelah diterapkan strategi KWL berada pada kategori sangat tinggi; (3) penerapan strategi KWL cukup efektif terhadap kemampuan siswa membaca pemahaman teks bahasa Inggris, dilihat dari peningkatan kemampuan siswa membaca teks bahasa Inggris. Rata-rata peningkatan kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks bahasa Inggris siswa setelah diterapkan strategi KWL lebih baik dibandingkan dengan kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks bahasa Inggris siswa sebelum diterapkan strategi KWL. Kata kunci: kemampuan membaca pemahaman, strategi know, want to know, learned (KWL). Reading comprehension is reading activity for understanding which involves knowledge or experience of the reader ( students ) are then connected to the content of the text. Reading comprehension ability to read English text must be mastered by students as one of the objectives to be achieved competence in elementary school. However, based on observations conducted on several elementary schools in Banjar, suggesting that reading comprehension ability to read English text is still very low. Learning with the strategy Know, Want to know, Learned give the opportunity for students to be active in reading activities before, during, and after reading. Research about the effectiveness implementation strategy Know, Want to know, Learned to reading comprehension ability to read English of elementary school students has the goal to get an idea of the effect of the application of the KWL strategy reading comprehension ability in learning English. The method used is pre experimental design of pre-test post-test with a population in VA grade of SDN 3 Mekarsari Kecamatan Banjar Kota Banjar. The sample consisted of all students in VA grade of SDN 3 Mekarsari selected based on consideration of saturation sampling, the students total are 28. The research instrument used is a matter of the initial test ( pre-test), about the end of the test ( post-test ) , and the observation sheet . The results showed that : ( 1 ) the reading comprehension ability to read English text of students before applied KWL strategy in middle category; ( 2 ) the reading comprehension ability to read English text of students after applied KWL strategy in very high category; ( 3 ) there are differences in the reading comprehension ability to read English text of students before and after application of KWL strategy. The average of increase in the reading comprehension ability to read English text students after applied KWL strategy is better than the reading comprehension ability to read English text of students before applied KWL strategy.
