Abstract
This research is a study to find out how the reception and response of the audience to the tragedy of 65 which is described in the documentary film entitled The Act of Killing. This research has a focus on examining the reception and response of students who are members of the Extra Campus Organizations (HMI, KAMMI, PMII) in the Indonesian University of Education. This research utilizes the use of a qualitative approach with a case study method and uses reception analysis from Stuart Hall as a source for the main analysis. The source of the data is obtained through the resulting interviews, documentation studies and collected literature. The results of the research give three audience positions that explain the meaning of the contents of film The Act Killing, Dominant Hegemony, the informant who likes, interprets and is influenced by the film's content so that watching this film can add a new perspective on historical events in Indonesia, because the information he got previously through the film Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI as well as the stories conveyed by the family were not perfect. Several informants in the position Negotiation considered this film as a film describing information that must be explored further through other learning processes, either through other media or through a discussion process, the film The Act of Killing is used as a comparison material. Informants who are in theposition Opposition are informants who think that the film is only a view of the maker and the atrocities committed by Anwar Congo in the film are a task that must be done, and choose not to recommend it to others.
