Abstract

This study aims to analyze the utilization of cohesive devices by a senior high school English teacher in writing an exposition text. This study employed Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) and adopted Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion framework as the data analysis operator to serve the aim. The participant was one English teacher that was selected because the teacher is already teaching English writing especially constructing exposition text. The data gathered from the analysis of an analytical exposition text focused only on grammatical cohesion (frequent reference and conjunction) and was interpreted descriptively along with the examples of the texts. The finding showed that the teacher already employed grammatical cohesion, especially the reference and conjunction types of cohesive devices. Furthermore, the researcher suggested further research to analyze a broader range of cohesive devices utilized by senior high school English teachers, including its lexical cohesion. Subsequently, the study also recommended comparing students’ analytical exposition text in terms of utilization of cohesive devices versus analytical exposition texts written by teachers to conclude or to find a more helpful statement for better pedagogic implementation in the future. In addition, it is highly recommended that the government, researchers, and teachers help to create suitable teaching materials to recognize the use of cohesive devices appropriately and adapt to the level of the students since the large number of studies complaining about students’ utilization of cohesive devices.
