Abstract

Multicultural education is an essential approach in creating a tolerant, inclusive and harmonious society. A strong attitude of tolerance can help reduce social conflict and encourage cooperation between individuals from diverse and different backgrounds. This research aims to increase students' tolerance attitudes by implementing multicultural education through the cooperative learning model in social studies learning. The subjects of this research were students at SMP Negeri 5 Bandung in class VIII-F. This research uses the Classroom Action Research (PTK) method with concepts from Kemmis and Mc. Taggart which consists of planning, implementation, observation and reflection. Data collection techniques use observation sheets, field notes, interviews and tests. The data analysis technique used is a descriptive analysis technique for data in the form of field notes and observation sheets (qualitative), as well as the results of calculating the resulting data based on instruments (quantitative). The planning, implementation, observation and reflection stages were assisted by 2 observers. In this research, it was found that the attitude of tolerance that received the lowest score was in point 5, namely "Able and willing to work together without considering different backgrounds and views". The results of the research show that there is a significant increase in students' tolerance attitudes with the implementation of multicultural education through the cooperative learning model in social studies learning. In cycle 1, the results of the students' tolerance attitude indicator obtained a result of 76% which was included in the good category. In cycle 2, these results increased by 13% with a percentage of 83% in the very good category. In cycle 3, the results of the students' tolerance attitude indicators increased by 7% to reach a score of 90% in the very good category.
