Abstract

Penelitian “Kerusuhan Rasial Los Angeles 92 (1991-1993)” ini dilatarbelakangi oleh ketertarikan peneliti terhadap masalah rasisme yang seringkali terjadi di negara Amerika Serikat. Permasalahan utama yang dikaji dalam penelitian ini menyangkut latar belakang bagaimana konflik akibat sentimen rasial yang secara umum sering terjadi di Amerika Serikat pada masa lalu menjadi penyebab kerusuhan Los Angeles 1992 hingga dampak yang terjadi akibat kerusuhan Los Angeles 1992. Secara umum penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk menganalisis serta mendeskripsikan bagaimana latar belakang hingga dampak yang terjadi akibat kerusuhan Los Angeles 1992. Penelitian ini dikaji melalui penggunaan metode sejarah yang terdiri dari beberapa langkah penelitian yaitu heuristik, kritik, interpretasi, kemudian historiografi. Selanjutnya hasil dari temuan dalam penelitian ini terkait kerusuhan yang terjadi di Los Angeles 1992 dilatarbelakangi berbagai faktor historis yang panjang mengenai diskriminasi rasial, sosial, ekonomi, dan politik sehingga latar belakang terjadinya kerusuhan Los Angeles 1992 sangat kompleks. Kerusuhan terjadi selama beberapa hari saja namun menjadikan kerusuhan tersebut sebagai salah satu kerusuhan yang terbesar dalam sejarah Amerika Serikat yang berdampak pada kehidupan sosial, politik, dan ekonomi. Kesimpulannya yakni berawal dari adanya faktor ketidakpuasan warga Afrika-Amerika terhadap penegakan hukum dan aparat kepolisian Los Angeles terkait kasus penangkapan Rodney King dan pembunuhan Latasha Harlins, dan adanya sentimen terhadap imigran dari Korea yang pada akhirnya terjadi penjarahan serta pembakaran terhadap properti dan bisnis milik orang Korea-Amerika. Penelitian ini diharapkan menjadi tambahan wawasan dan bahan untuk penelitian berikutnya dengan tema yang sama dan pentingnya menjaga hubungan antar ras/etnis. This research is motivated by the researcher's interest in the problem of racism that frequently occurs in the United States of America. The primary focus of this study centers on examining the background of how conflicts arising from racial sentiments, which have historically been prevalent in the United States, contributed to the 1992 Los Angeles riots and the subsequent impacts of these events. In essence, this study aims to analyze and describe the background leading to the consequences of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The research employs historical methods, encompassing several research steps, such as heuristics, interpretation, criticism, and historiography. Furthermore, the findings of this study concerning the 1992 Los Angeles riots were influenced by various long-standing historical factors related to racial, social, economic, and political discrimination, rendering the background of the riots highly complex. Although the riots lasted only a few days, they rank as one of the most significant riots in the history of the United States, with far-reaching impacts on social, political, and economic life. In conclusion, these events were triggered by the dissatisfaction of African Americans with law enforcement and the Los Angeles police, particularly regarding the arrest of Rodney King and the murder of Latasha Harlins, as well as sentiments towards Korean immigrants, which ultimately resulted in the looting and burning of properties and businesses owned by Korean Americans. It is hoped that this research will provide additional insight and material for subsequent research on the same theme and emphasize the importance of maintaining relations between races and ethnicities.
