Abstract

The burning issue of the study is about teaching reading comprehension. Reading is very important, therefore, a good and interesting technique for teaching reading is necessary to improve students’ reading comprehension. Nowadays, some teachers still use conventional technique in teaching reading comprehension. However, the conventional technique does not seem to motivate the students and make a significant progress. That is why CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) approach is proposed as the alternative way to improve students’ reading comprehension. The aim of the study was to investigate whether or not CTL approach was effective in improving students’ reading comprehension and to investigate the students’ response toward the use of CTL in teaching reading comprehension. The study used quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test design. The study involved two classes of the first grade students of one private senior high school in Bandung as the sample. The findings from post-test of the experimental and control groups indicated that the CTL approach treatment was significantly effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. It can be seen from the statistical result of post-test score of experimental group (M = 8.31, SE = 0.18) that was higher than control group (M = 6.84, SE = 0.21). Since t (58) = -22.574, p < 0.05, so H0 was rejected. It means that there was difference between experimental and control group. CTL approach was effective in improving students reading comprehension. The findings from the questionnaires showed that almost all students were interested in CTL and CTL had some challenges. The first challenge was the stage of CTL that was rather complicated to do due to many stages involved. The second challenge dealt with time. Students thought that CTL was time-consuming. The third challenge was they were not ready when they had to work in groups. In reference to the result of the study, the conclusion was drawn that CTL treatment significantly improved the first grade students’ reading comprehension. As recommendation, teachers who apply this approach are recommended to use CTL along with clear instructions.
