Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify types of idioms as well as translation strategy used by the translator in translating types of idioms found in the subtitle of film Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End. The idea of the research was basically generated by the difficulty of learning idioms. The research applied qualitative descriptive method. In order to gather the data, both English and Indonesia text subtitles were used in this research. A hundred of the data collected were chosen by using a simple random sampling technique. Furthermore, they were analyzed by using the theory of Hockett in finding out the types of idioms and the theory of Baker in finding out the translation strategy. The result of the research showed that from a hundred idioms analyzed, English phrasal compound (32%) was the most frequent types of idioms found in the film. Likewise, translation by paraphrase (53%) was the most frequent translation strategy employed by the translator in translating idioms. Although translation by paraphrase was used in a big number, this strategy was commonly used in translating English phrasal compound (28 items), abbreviation (2 items), and figure of speech (19 items).
