Abstract

Writing is the most difficult skill to be mastered (Alwasilah, 2007), consequently teachers should pay more attention to teach this skill. This study entitled “The Use of Collaboration in Teaching Writing” was conducted to investigate students’ perception toward the use of collaboration and the obstacles faced by students in the use of this method in their writing class. The study applied a qualitative approach to gain the answer to the questions. To avoid bias in analyzing the data, the study used a triangulation method, which combines observation, questionnaire, and interview as instruments of the study. Direct observation was held when the method implemented by the teacher and it was recorded to be analyzed. Then, the close-ended questionnaires were administered after the teacher implemented the method. The data from the questionnaires were analyzed using Likert scale quantitatively. The last is unstructured interview. This instrument was given to 5 students that were chosen randomly and the questions were given without particular order and recorded using mobile phone. The data then transcribed to be analyzed. The respondents of this study were 40 students of XI IPA 1 of SMAN 3 Cimahi. The findings of the study show that 57.73 % of students agree that the use of collaboration method is appropriate for teaching writing. There are 6 obstacles faced by students in the use of collaboration in teaching writing. First, the respondent writers doubt the ability of collaborators. Second, collaboration method takes a long time. Third, collaboration method is boring. Fourth, teachers are less involved in collaboration so the writing process is difficult without sufficient guidance from the teachers. Fifth, the respondent writers have limited ability so they confused to revise and to be revised. Sixth, the respondent writers are less motivated to collaborate if the writing was not attractive. Thus, for implementing the method of collaboration, the teachers not only should be involved in the process of collaboration but also pay more attention in grouping the students to keep the process organize well.
