Abstract
This paper is entitled “the use of series of pictures in improving students’ writing procedure texts”. This study was aimed at investigating whether the use of series of pictures improved students’ writing procedure text and to what extent the use of series pictures improved students’ writing of procedure text. To meet these aims, this study used a quasi experimental design with pretest and posttest design. The study involved two classes of the first grade students of one state junior high school in Bandung as the sample. Furthermore, the data were collected by administering writing tests including pretest and posttest. As the results, the significant value did not exceed the level of significance (0.000 < 0.05), and there was a significant difference in the means of the posttest between the experimental group (68.30) and the control group (56.80). It meant that the use series of pictures was effective to improve students’ writing of procedure text. Besides, the results of document analysis showed students’ positive achievements in each aspect of writing such as genre, register, discourse, grammar, and graphic features. Based on the results, some recommendations are proposed, such as teachers are encouraged to use series of pictures in teaching and learning process particularly teaching writing. Moreover, other researchers who are interested in teaching English by using series of pictures are recommended to explain the use of series of pictures in other skills in teaching different levels much deeper and better with longer periods of time to find out the better and detailed results. Penelitian ini berjudul “the use of series of pictures in improving students’ writing procedure texts”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti apakah penggunaan gambar berseri itu dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur dan seberapa besar penggunaan gambar berseri itu dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur. Untuk mencapai tujuan-tujuan tersebut, penelitian ini mengunakan metode eksperimen semu (Quasi-experimental research) dengan pretest-posttest design. Dalam penelitian ini, dua kelas dari kelas tujuh di salah satu sekolah negeri menengah pertama dipilih sebagai sampel penelitian. Kemudian, data dikumpulkan dengan menyusun tes menulis dari pretest dan posttest. Dari pengumpulan data diperoleh bahwa nilai signifikan dari hasil tes tidak melebih tinggi dari tingkat signifikansi (0.000 < 0.05), dan terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara nilai rata-rata posttest kedua kelompok dimana nilai rat-rata posttest kelompok eksperimen yaitu (68.30) dan kelompok kontrol (56.80). Hal ini dapat disimpulkan bahawa penggunaan gembar berseri efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa terutama menulis teks prosedur. Selain itu juga, hasil analisis data berupa dokumen studi ditemukan bahwa siswa memberi peningkatan positif dalam setiap aspek menulis seperti genre, register, discourse, grammar, dan graphic features. Berdasarkan hasil data analisis yang telah diuraikan, beberapa rekomendasi ditujukan untuk para pendidik yang mana dianjurkan untuk menggunakan gambar berseri dalam proses kegiatan belajar dan mengajar khusunya pembelajran menulis. Disamping ittu, para peneliti yang tertarik dalam kegiatan mengajar bahasa inggris dengan menggunakan gambar berseri direkomendasikan untuk menjelaskan lebih detil dan mendalam mengenai penggunaan gambar berseri untuk kemampuan bahasa lainnya seperti berbicara, membaca, dan mendengar.
