Abstract

The research entitled PERFORMING GENDER: GAY IDENTITY IN A COLLECTION OF YOUNG ADULT SHORT STORIES “AM I BLUE? COMING OUT FROM THE SILENCE”aims to reveal the performative acts that construct the characters’ identity and to discover the factor(s) that destabilized gender as shown in the selected short stories. The analysis is based within the framework of queer theory and gender performativity as proposed by Judith Butler (1990). This research employs a qualitative method. The findings show that the selected short stories have embedded accessories, attitude, clothing, discourse, physical appearance and physical reaction of gay characters into the literary devices, such as characterization and plot to communicate ideas about gender performativity. In the selected short stories Am I Blue?written by Bruce Coville (1994), attitude, gay discourse, physical appearance and physical reaction are highlighted. Clothing as the form of performative acts takes a dominant role in Winnie and Tommy written by Francesca Lia Block (1994). Whereas, attitude or both attitude and physical reaction are shown as the main forms inHonorary Shepherdswritten by Gregory Maguire (1994) and Three Mondays in July written by James Cross Giblin (1994). Furthermore, destabilizing gender can be portrayed through the performative acts in the selected short stories within the forms of clothing, accessory or attitude.
